wolvesThe small group of soldiers stands on the side of a steep mountain over a cliff. Far below, the wasteland valley is full of dark figures, each about the size of a young horse. The sounds of talons and heavy paws on the ground rise up with the smell of dry dusty earth and blood, as if the army of wolves was sending its shadows up ahead of it. Howls come from above and behind, and the monsters rally for a sprint up the mountainside. The commander of the soldiers speaks to the women who stand among them: “They don’t look like they can stop for long, and they’ll be gone in a moment, hurry up and give them your babies, othewolves
UNDER CONSTRUCTIONThe echoes made by the running girl in the crude metal walkway-tunnel were muffled by the Martian sand covering it, and the only other noise was the constant wind blowing at incredible speeds over the plastic skylights. Lily panted heavily as she made her way to town, trying to run most of the way. The tunnels were longer than she had thought. Years ago the frequent walking trips had been easy, and with the dancing and violin lessons which kept her healthy and fit she thought it would take less… but no time to doubt, she was already stopping every five hundred feet or so to catch her breath at a bench.
